Biography

In 1866 the Maryland State Normal School (MSNS) opened to train teachers for the state public school system. It had been established in 1864 when the Maryland state constitution was rewritten to provide for a public school system.

The Towerlight is the online independent student newspaper at Towson University. It is run by Towson students, and frequently updates the campus on events and news. This collection contains photographs used (and not) in publication as well as a full print run spanning 100 years.

Abstract

Libertus Van Bokkelen was the first State Superintendent of Public Instruction and principal ex officio for the Maryland State Normal School from 1864 until 1867. These records which date from 1889 to 1997 consist of correspondence from Van Bokkelen as well as biographies written about him by staff at St. Timothy’s Protestant Episcopal Church in Catonsville, Maryland, and Towson Archives staff members.
