General
The Photographic Series of the Paul H. Gantt Nuremberg Trial Papers is a collection of 71 photographs from the OMGUS Military Tribunal Cases 1-12. There are varying numbers of images from each case, but all cases are represented. The images were numbered by the Public Relations Photo Section of the Office, Chief of Counsel for War Crimes. The numbering system employed signifies which case the photo depicts, and places it among one of six categories: defense, prosecution, defense counsel, witness, tribunal, and general view. Many of the photos are accompanied by detailed descriptions, but some are not. In two cases, the photo number is missing, or unclear, and the photo has been placed in order based on identifiable people in the photo. It is not clear why this particular collection of photos is held in the Gantt Papers. It may be that they were gathered by Paul Gantt as he prepared to edit the Green Series, since some of these photos appear in those volumes. However, not all of these photos appear in the Green Series, and others not in this collection do. Further, the captions printed in the Green Series do not seem to be drawn from the detailed descriptions that accompany these photos, so there is no evidence conclusively tying these together.
