Transparencies (35mm slides)

 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection is chiefly composed of photographic materials from Frederick James Ladd dating from the late 1960s to the late 1990s. The bulk of the materials consist of 35mm slides (about 12,500) corresponding to images of various art historical periods, including Greek, Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Many of the slides were probably taken by Dr. Ladd, while others appear to have been purchased at the various locations he visited. Subjects include sculptures, paintings, gardens, fountains, archeological sites, and architectural structures, such as churches, palaces, and villas. A few highlights include the archeological sites of Pompeii and Ostia Antica, art works by Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Bernini, as well as Greek, Roman, and English architecture. Other materials include photographs, negatives, contact prints, and personal papers, including two notebooks containing Dr. Ladd’s dissertation research notes from 1971.

Arrangement

The slides have been maintained, for the most part, in the order in which they arrived at the repository. Generally, the red/orange labels appear to indicate a general geographical area/topic/artist’s names and are primarily placed at the beginning of each group, while the rest of the labels seem to indicate more specific places/titles of artworks within the general topic, and appear to be placed at the end of a particular group of slides. The brown labels appear to indicate other points of reference, such as “see under” and other relevant information. Slides are housed in numbered sheets of twenty each for organization and preservation purposes.
