Biographical / Historical

The exact date of the founding of the Young Women's Christian Association at the Maryland State Normal School is unknown, but it occured not long after the school moved to Towson. It engaged students on campus as well as religious establishments in the local community. The group's scope ranged from local to international issues, and the students ran plays, bazaars, and even a store room to raise funds for their activities. Religious activities included monthly vesper services, weekly morning watch, and grace at meals with the Chimes Guild. Programs such as the Ask Me Girls and the Big Sister movement oriented Freshmen to the school. In 1939 the name of the group changed to the Student Christian Association to incorporate male members.
