Biographical / Historical
Students and faculty of the Maryland State Normal School founded the Chi Alpha Sigma fraternity on June 12, 1925 at the home Principal Lida Lee Tall. The letters of the name stand for "character", "achievement", and "scholarship". Students were inducted after meeting scholastic and personal conduct and achievement standards. Alumni and others associated with the school with significant contributions to education could also be inducted. A senate of faculty, members, or recipients of honor scholarships determined who would be invited to the fraternity. A program of the honor society included compiling content about county histories for teachers. In 1940 the fraternity chose to affiliate with Kappa Delta Pi. Chi Alpha Sigma continued as an alumni association.
